Depression

Depression symptoms can include sadness, poor energy, lack of joy, poor concentration, sleep disturbance, changes in appetite, and fatigue which lead to an inability to function in your daily life. Treatment usually consists of a combination of medications, therapy, and lifestyle modifications.

Anxiety

Anxiety is defined as a state of difficult to control and persistent worry. It can include symptoms of feeling nervous or on edge, difficulty relaxing, restlessness, irritability, muscle tension, poor concentration, and sleep disturbance. Treatment approaches can be similar to those for depression and include a combination of medications, therapy, and lifestyle changes.

Bipolar

Bipolar disorder is not just "mood swings," but rather distinct episodes of depression alternating with mania. Mania is defined by an episode which can involve feelings of grandeur, racing thoughts, high energy, risky behaviors, and feeling a decreased need for sleep. Bipolar 1 and 2 are differentiated by the length of each manic episode, with bipolar 2 having shorter manic episodes that can be more difficult to identify. Treatment differs from major depressive disorder in that medications must include mood stabilizers to prevent manic episodes while addressing depression. Therapy and lifestyle factors are also crucial for long-term positive outcomes.
